Georgetown Shennanigans

Well, it's been just shy of a week since we alighted the tiny, ricketty plane in GT airport, and I can state categorically that I'm crap in the heat. Burnt shoulders and a constant sheen of sweat aside (it's all highly attractive), I'm OK! Which I'm sure won't surprise most of you considering all we've been doing for six days is sitting around drinking El Dorado rum and playing cards.

We're not even being lazy by Guyanese standards, particularly; the heat and general pace of life allow for little else. As enjoyable as this week has been - and it has been lovely to sit very firmly in this holiday mode limbo - we've been a bit bored, so it was a relief when we recently headed to the Ministry of Education for a seminar on teaching. Considering the Minister of Education was present, as well as several other reasonably important governmental functionaries, the day had the potential to be quite formal. Given that this is Guyana, though, we stopped every five minutes for a snack, and all sensible, teachery talk rapidly degenerated into somebody unleashing a gutteral stream of freestyle rap for about 15 minutes. I'm enjoying the laid-back attitude of this country. Yesterday we attended the Amerindian Heritage Interfaith Service (the official launch of Amerindian Heritage Month, held at the Umana Yana benab), and only noticed halfway through that we were sitting beside the Prime Minister.

Claire and I head to Wakapoa by speedboat tomorrow, and more complete updates will come once we have more stable internet access. But this is Guyana, so whether or not anything will work/we actually end up in our project remains to be seen...
